JUBA – A senior member of South Sudan’s main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny has urged General Simon Gatwech Dual to return to the main armed opposition group.
General Gatwech is previously the military chief of staff of the SPLA-IO, but defected to form a faction of his own in August last year following and attempt by him and other senior opposition commanders to remove First Vice President Machar as leader of the group.
Speaking to Sudans Post this afternoon, Dut Majokdit, SPLM-IO member of National Liberation Council and close ally of Machar, said the defection of General William Gatjiath Deng to the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit has left Gatwech with no proper objective other than to rejoin the SPLM-IO under Machar.
“William Gatjiath who engineered the Kitgwang project has now defected to the regime of President Salva Kiir Mayardit and General Gatwech and General Olony should return to the SPLM-IO because the Kitgwang project has failed,” he told Sudans Post in Juba on Saturday.
In a Facebook statement, Majokdit said “The so called Kitgwang mouthpiece who engineered the defection in August last year has left the dark forces in Magenis and the old man in disarray in Khartoum after he declined several phones calls from Sultan Gatwech, otherwise I don’t want to mention those who were in Presidential Palace for the Handshakes after their defection to (KD) Kitgwang.”
