JUBA – Eight of South Sudan’s newly appointed nine deputy governors have been sworn into office on Thursday before President Salva Kiir Mayardit in a ceremony administered by the country’s chief justice Chaan Reec Madut, according to the presidency.
The deputy governors who were sworn in before Kiir include Antipas Nyok Kucha, the deputy governor of Jonglei State, Poth Madit Dut, deputy governor of Lakes State,Tor Tungwar Kueiguong of Unity State, Angelo Biajo Taban of Western Bahre el Ghazal State, Kennedy Gaaniko Baime of Western Equatoria State, Ayen Mayor Makuei of Warrap State, Tong Lual Ayat of Northern Bahre el Ghazal State and Sarah Nene Redento of Central Equatoria State.
A statement by the presidency said one of the newly appointed deputy governors could not be sworn in because she was not in the county.
Speaking following the ceremony, Kiir urged and appealed to “all the States Deputy Governors to cooperate as parties and States local governments and deliver services to the people of South Sudan to the best of their abilities.”
According t o the presidency statement, Kiir also “urged the newly sworn in States Deputy Governors to go to their respective states and serve their people, not as political Parties but as one government in determination to maintaining Peace and Stability at state level.”
