Speaking to Sudans Post this afternoon, police spokesman Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin said Kalisto’s wife filed a report with the police following the former Juba mayor’s arrest, stating that he was arrested by the NSS.
“He is not being detained by the police service. I think he is being detained by the NSS and his wife came and opened a case for the arrest of her husband. So, the people who are detaining him are not the police, they are the National Security Service,” he said.
Oyet reacts
In a statement, Parliament’s First Deputy Speaker Oyet Nathaniel demanded Lado’s immediate release, saying he had received information about Lado’s arrest at 11:29 PM Juba local time.
Oyet, who is also deputy chairman of the main armed opposition SPLM-IO, criticized the controversial powers granted to the NSS, allowing for arrest and detention without a warrant.
“I am calling upon those who have arrested and are detaining the former Lord Mayor to respect the due process of law and produce him to the police and court of law within 24 hours,” said Oyet.
The top lawmaker added that failure to arraign him before a competent court of law would be regarded as illegal detention, attracting punishment.
“Let it also be known to whoever is holding Kalisto that violations of local laws is not a privilege and it is contestable in regional and international courts should the local remedies prove compromised.”
He disclosed there are reports of gruesome torture of an innocent engineer by some security elements.
“All these are happening in violation of fundamental human rights [of] persons and their civil liberties,” he concluded.
