Security sources told Sudans Post that Sufian had maintained contact with SAF commanders since June and had been seeking a way to defect. His plan intensified after Abu Aqla Keikel defected to the SAF early Sunday morning last week.
According to an RSF security source who declined to be identified, Keikel, already in Tambuol, informed Sufian of his defection at 12:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Sufian left Khartoum at 1:00 a.m., but Keikel, unable to wait, moved on to Jebel Al-Lambatar. Sufian, without the necessary permissions, was subsequently intercepted and captured in Tambuol, a town briefly taken by the army before being retaken by the RSF.
“We have observed his movements since June, and he has been looking for a way. He and Keikel knew they were planning to defect, but Keikel’s timing forced Sufian’s capture. When he realized we were already near Tambuol, he hid in a small house, and we found him,” the RSF source said.
Sufian was reportedly transported back to Khartoum on Tuesday night, according to multiple security sources.
“He has to answer questions from the leadership. He must clarify the circumstances around his defection attempt, and a committee will be formed to investigate,” one source said.
Sufian, an ethnic Miseriya, was a captain in the Sudanese Air Force before the conflict erupted in April 2023. He has since referred to himself as “the captain who rebelled against the corrupt army leaders and politicians.”
In videos circulating online, Captain Sufian appears with visible signs of having been beaten. At one point, he attempts to explain to RSF soldiers—who can be heard saying, “We have now captured Sufian”—that he was not defecting to the SAF.
Despite his efforts to deny the allegations, the RSF soldiers appear skeptical, continuing to accuse him of attempted defection.
