JUBA/KHARTOUM – A senior South Sudan main armed opposition commander has died in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, Sudans Post has learned.
Lieutenant General Simon Jok Gatwech, a senior member of the SPLM-IO led by First Vice President Taban Deng Gai passed on during the early hours of Sunday after suffering from a long illness that Sudans Post could not confirm.

In a statement, the Liech Community in Kenya confirmed the demise of the senior opposition commander and hailed him for his role in the liberation of the world’s youngest country during its war with Sudan and also described him as an iconic leader.
“We, at the Liech community Association in Kenya, received the news of the demise of Lt Gen. Jock Gatwech with profound sorrow. He passed away in Khartoum on 5th June, 2021. Late General Jock Gatwech was a selfless guerilla leader,” Liech Community Chairman Dak Buoth said in a statement extended to Sudans Post.
“On behalf of the Liech community Association in Kenya, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the family of General Jock as they mourn the loss of this iconic leader who dedicated his entire life to our struggles for freedom. The passing away of General Jock is a national loss,” he added.
“The Liech community and the people of the Republic of South Sudan acknowledge and appreciate the immeasurable and lasting legacy of General Jock Gatwech toward our country’s political independence,” he further said.
General Gatwech is a senior SPLM-IO commander who also fought during the 21 years of conflict with Sudan. He is described by fellow opposition and SSPDF commanders as “a celebrated soldier who will be remembered for centuries.”
