JUBA – South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, James Pitia Morgan has called for immediate lifting of sanctions on the country.

He was on Friday speaking at this year’s Antalya Diplomatic Forum in Türkiye.

Pitia said the sanctions on South Sudan have hindered the country’s progress.

“I am appealing to the UN [United Nations] to play an active role in advocating for the removal of sanctions that impede South Sudan’s development,” he said.

Pitia urged the UN-member states to push for removal of South Sudan sanctions.

The Antalya Diplomatic Forum attracted heads of states, government officials, diplomats, business leaders, academics, representatives from youth and media.

The three-day forum aimed at facilitating comprehensive discussions and explored peaceful solutions to the global challenges the world currently faces.

In 2018, the UN Security Council imposed an arms embargo on South Sudan. In May 2023, the Council adopted a resolution to renew the embargo for a year.
