MALAKAL, JULY 1, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan’s main opposition SPLM-IO party led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar on Saturday launched its party secretariat and a membership registration exercise in Upper Nile State.

The launch in the capital Malakal was witnessed and chaired by Upper Nile State Governor James Othok Oyiay who is also the head of the SPLM-IO in the state.

Othok told Sudans Post during the launch that the establishment of the SPLM-IO secretariat in Upper Nile State is a significant milestone in the party’s efforts to build a strong and vibrant political organization in the state.

The top opposition and government official urged all party members to participate in the membership registration exercise “and to work together to build a united and prosperous South Sudan.”

Othok who was appointed to replace Abudhok Anyang in January said the SPLM-IO is committed to working with other parties to the revitalized peace agreement “to implement the peace agreement and to build a better future for all South Sudanese.”

“The SPLM-IO party secretariat will play a vital role in coordinating the party’s activities in the state and in ensuring that the party’s voice is heard,” he added.

The membership registration exercise will run indefinitely and will be conducted at all SPLM-IO offices in the state, he said.

“Party members who are interested in registering can do so by providing their personal details and by paying a nominal fee,” he said.
