JUBA, JUNE 28, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – The South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) under President Salva Kiir Mayardit has announced that it has relinquished top army positions to the main armed opposition SPLA-IO and South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA).

In a statement, SSPDF spokesman Major-General Lul Ruai Koang said the SPLA-IO has been asked to summit list of their officers who are to occupy senior positions and be confirmed as commanders of South Sudan People’s Defense Forces.

“SSPDF Command has successfully completed and announced exact positions relinquished to SPLA IO and SSOA,” Lul said in a brief social media statement on Tuesday.

“It’s now the responsibility of IO and SSOA leaders to submit lists of officers who will occupy positions allocated to them,” he added.

He stressed that “It’s very important for lists to be submitted to H.E the President so that their ranks are confirmed as officers in the national army (SSPDF).”

In March this year, Gen. Lul told Sudans Post that the army positions have been divided and that the SSPDF had been given 211, SPLA-IO took 106 positions, and SSOA, got 33 positions.

The SPLA-IO has previously rejected the formula and it remains unclear if it has now accepted that division.
