RUMBEK – Unidentified criminals have stolen 1.85 million South Sudanese pounds (SSP) and 1,100 US dollars from a shop in Rumbek Market, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

Lakes State police spokesman Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac said the theft occurred overnight and an investigation is underway.

He acknowledged the challenges of patrolling a large market.

“There is a patrol team in the market, but you know very well the market is very huge of which it cannot be covered just simply like that,” Makuac said.

“Criminals are also monitoring to get the way they can benefit out of people’s property,” he added.

Makuac urged cooperation from the business community in identifying suspects and sharing information with authorities.

“Security is a collective responsibility that cannot be handled or rendered by one person,” he said.

“We need your help through information if you have any suspicion somewhere else or on a person then you let us know, and we shall investigate to find out to ascertain information about who are the criminals moving around,” he added.
