JUBA – A South Sudan civil society watchdog has condemned unfolding political unrest in Western Equatoria State after a group armed men attacked the residence of a senior SPLA-IO commander in Yambio in which one of his bodyguards was wounded.

Yesterday, an armed group identifying itself as People Defenders’ Front (PDF) attacked the house of the SPLA-IO commander of division 9B in Yambio and clashed with his bodyguards, leaving one of the bodyguards wounded.

An attack by the same armed group on boda-boda riders also resulting in the wounding of one of the riders.

In a statement to Sudans Post, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) condemned the developing situation and urged the political leaders in the restive state to resolve their political grievances through peaceful mean.

“CEPO strongly condemns the recent negative political development in Yambio following the recent political frictions among the political leaders. We are witnessing disturbing and worrying negative developments around Yambio in some parts,” CEPO said in a statement signed by its Executive Director Edmund Yakani.

“The political leaders of the current government in Yambio should abstain from resolving their differences in a violent manner. Triggering violent approach for mitigating political differences is unaccepted and the top leadership of the country should immediately intervene in Yambio political crisis before it get worse and uncontrollable,” Yakani stressed.

He said that “The trend of cultivate political frictions that leads to violent confrontation is a demonstration of political indiscipline behaviors and attitudes of undermining successful political transitional process in the state and the country at large.”

“Finally, CEPO is urging the members of the uniform institutions to avoid engaging in the political frictions in Yambio. Let the politicians face themselves and the top leadership of the country under the presidency should apply the principle of resolving political frictions with change of leadership as applied recently in some states.”
