Watchdog welcomes gov’t plan for new salary structure for civil servants

South Sudan’s civil society watchdog, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), has welcomed government decision to unveil a new salary structure for the country’s civil servants, amid inflation and economic crisis.

JUBA – South Sudan’s civil society watchdog, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), has welcomed government decision to unveil a new salary structure for the country’s civil servants, amid inflation and economic crisis.

Speaking to journalists following a weekly cabinet meeting in Juba on September 9, information minister and government spokesman Michael Makuei Lueth revealed that the government has decided to unveil a new salary structure for civil servants to meet current market demands

“This is one is a new salary structure that covers every employee being a civil a servant whether in grade 1, grade 18, grade 17 and constitutional post holders and It is an overall salary structure,” said Makuei.

“When you are determining such things, you are evaluating and put so many things into consideration including market prices,” he added.

When contacted by Sudans Post, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) Edmund Yakani welcomed the decision by the government saying it is a possible call to the demand for raise in public servants’ salary.

“CEPO welcomes the take of the government on informing the public about the move to adopt new salary structure for the civil servants. This is a positive response to the calls for improvement of the civil servants’ salaries for better performance of our civil servants in delivering social services to the citizens,” Yakani said.

“This move should be a real action that just the talk because similar promises were made in the past ranging from president declaration of 100% increment of civil servants’ salaries,” Yakani added.

He further urged “the political leaders and parliamentarians to act urgently on the improvement of civil servants’ salaries because it is vital for better civil servants’ performance.”
