RUMAKER – A Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) official has described as “catastrophic” the humanitarian situation in Rumaker village of Aweil East County, calling for assistance for over 700 households living in makeshift shelters.
Speaking to journalists in Aweil on Tuesday, the RRC deputy chairperson for Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Angelo Deng Akol said a survey showed returnees need urgent attention from authorities and stakeholders.
“We are going to send the team of the enumerators within a week to go and register the returnees in Rumaker so that relief assistance is given,” he explained.
Deng said returnees in Rumaker are hosted by locals already facing economic hardships.
According to the official, Aweil East county is one of the regions the World Food Programme (WFP) described as more food insecure and categorized in Level 4.
He said the returnees would get non-food items with land allocated for farming.
The intervention came barely a month after the county commissioner and other local officials conducted a verification exercise prior to RRC’s assistance.
