JUBA – South Sudan’s prominent activist Edmund Yakani has issued a statement welcoming the endorsement of the peace roadmap which provides for extension of the transitional period for two additional years.
South Sudan parliament yesterday endorsed the roadmap agreed upon by the parties to the revitalized peace agreement in August this year after disagreements over what provisions of the agreement should be completed prior to conduct of general elections.
In a statement, Yakani who is the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) welcomed the endorsement of the roadmap and thanked the parliament for responding to his recent call for the august house to ratify the deal.
“CEPO welcomes the decision of the national parliament for ratifying the roadmap for the extension of the transitional period for 24 months. It is remarkable decision made and thanks for the parliament to positively responding to our continuous advocacy and lobby on the act of ratification of roadmap for the extension of transitional period for 24 months,” he said.
“The parliament endorsed the roadmaps for extension of the transitional period for the 24 months from 22 February 2022 to 22 February 2025. Now the extension of the transitional period for 24 months legitimate and only awaits the signature of the President of the Republic,” he added.
Yakani who has on many occasions called on the parliament to ratify the deal to avoid lose of legitimacy further said the remaining task is for the parties to fully implement the revitalized peace agreement by the timeline provided for in the roadmap.
“The implementation of the roadmap of the R-ARCSS by the parties is now the next step that the parliament should take serious responsibility of oversight. CEPO urges the parties in the R-TGoNU to implement the roadmap for the implementation of the pending tasks of the R-ARCSS,” he said.
