JUBA – A South Sudanese human rights activist has urged President Salva Kiir Mayardit to take action to address the nation’s worsening economic hardship, a day after the local currency plummeted to new low against US dollar.
Traders in Juba told Sudans Post earlier today that 1 US dollar was being sold at the rate of 3010 South Sudanese pound.
In reaction, the Executive Director of Centre for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) Ter Manyang Gatwech called for “alternative solutions” to the economic crisis caused by the depreciating currency.
“The Centre for Peace and Advocacy calls on President Salva Kiir Mayardit to address the current economic crisis that is causing confusion and hardship among citizens,” Gatwech stated in a statement today.
Gatwech’s statement comes amid a significant decline in the value of the SSP against the US dollar.
“It is time for us to confront the situation with an open mind and honesty, in order to prevent another unforeseen crisis from arising due to the current economic hardship experienced by citizens,” he said.
He emphasized the urgency of action, highlighting the plight of millions of South Sudanese struggling to afford necessities due to the economic crisis.
Gatwech further concluded by calling on the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity to provide hope and alleviate the suffering of the people.
