The forum also focused on managing security crises and resettling internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The forum brought together county commissioners, traditional leaders, civil society representatives, and government officials to discuss the challenges facing the state and identify solutions.
Key issues included inter-communal violence, cattle raiding, displacement, and the need to improve service delivery in health, education, and infrastructure.
Jonglei State Deputy Governor Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk opened the forum, commending participants for their constructive engagement and reiterating the government’s commitment to implementing the agreed-upon resolutions.
“You are all here today to understand the direction of your county and its policies,” Atong said, emphasizing the commissioners’ crucial role, especially during disasters.
She also called for a review of resolutions from previous commissioners’ forums, assessing their implementation and identifying areas for future action.
Gilbert Nantsa, the UNMISS representative, urged the nine county commissioners to collaborate effectively in their duties. The UN official stressed their importance in implementing government resolutions and expanding the political space.
“UNMISS therefore underscores the need for county commissioners to implement the gubernatorial order 012024 on civil and political space and allow all political parties equal access to engage with communities on their political programs ahead of the upcoming elections,” Nantsa said.
Nantsa also emphasized the need for security forces to prioritize security to enhance stability in Jonglei State.
“UNMISS further called for strengthened collaboration between county commissioners, traditional leaders, and security institutions to enhance stability in Jonglei State,” Nantsa added.
The Jonglei State County Commissioners Forum is an annual event supported by UNMISS. It provides a platform for key stakeholders to discuss issues of concern to the state.
