JUBA – President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Thursday signed into law two bills, namely the National Social Insurance Fund Act, 2023, and the South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2009 (Amendment) Act, 2023.

These bills were passed by the Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly (R-TNLA) in October and were presented to the President by Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba today.

The National Social Insurance Fund Act, 2023, establishes a national social insurance scheme designed to provide financial support to individuals during retirement, disability, and other challenging situations.

John Agany, head of the parliamentary information committee, highlighted in October that the Act aims to address the absence of a comprehensive social security system in South Sudan and offer essential assistance to the country’s workforce.

The South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2009 (Amendment) Act, 2023, introduces adjustments to the existing anti-corruption legislation.

Specific details regarding these amendments were not disclosed in the President’s statement.

However, legislators emphasized their dedication to strengthening the fight against corruption and ensuring the effective functioning of the South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission during the October discussions.

While the potential effects of these laws are yet to unfold, their implementation underscores the government’s commitment to prioritizing social security and anti-corruption measures.
